Blood gas electrodes

For a human body, partial pressures of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood is very important and to be maintained at an optimum value. The partial pressure of a gas is proportional to the quantity of that gas in the blood. To check the health status of respiratory and cardiovascular systems, this physiological measurement is to be carried out. Oxygen partial pressure or oxygen tension is commonly measured in vitro or vivo. Reduction process method is employed here. But the disadvantage remains here is that this reduction process crutch up removal of a finite amount of oxygen from the cathode. Current lag with time, called aging which occurs here is also a serious concern. pH methods are employed for the measurement of partial pressure of carbon dioxide. Electrode used here is called Severinghaus electrode.
