Biomedical applications of computer

Computerized axial tomography and emission computerized tomography are the two well known applications of computer in biomedical field. For the analysis of analog electro cardio graph signals, computers are used. Here the processes involved are analog to digital signal conversion, signal filtering and pattern recognition. Computers are extensively used in clinical laboratory for test requisitions, blood drawing list preparation, Scheduling of test sample loading, test results reading, analysis and reporting. A computer based cardiac intensive care unit is capable of monitoring blood pressure and heart pulse rate. Computer controlled wheel chairs, computer controlled electromyoelectric limbs, computer controlled prosthetic hands etc. are very much useful for handicapped persons. Here the system contains a central processing unit (CPU), an analog to digital converter memory, a signal conditioning unit, some relay drives and input/output ports.
