Vitamins are essential components or ingredients of human body which ensures healthy growth and reproduction. Vitamins are organic compounds and are present in animal diets in small amounts. Vitamins are essential nutrients and any sort of shortage of it will lead to diseases of various kinds. There are two types of vitamins- water-soluble and fat-soluble. Water-soluble vitamins are normally large enzyme molecules which are converted into small molecules by biosynthesis. Thiamin is a vitamin which occurs in the outer coats of the seeds of many plants including cereal grains. It is also known vitamin B1 whose deficiency will lead to nutritional disease Beri-beri. In animal tissues, it occurs as thiamin pyrophosphate or as cocarboxylase. Food products made from whole wheat are good sources of this vitamin. The disease Beri-beri leads to muscular weakness, loss of weight and nervous system failure.
