Blood samplers and desiccators

Syringes are often used to collect blood samples. Plastic material is used to make syringes. Needles are made of either stainless steel or aluminium. As a substitute to syringes, we can use vacutainers. Vacutainers are evacuated test tubes with a rubber cap. Clotting of the blood can be averted by the usage of an anticoagulating agent. A desiccator is used to keep samples dry. A desiccator is actually an airtight container. It consisits of two portions. In top portion, sample is kept and in bottom portion, a dessicant such as calcium chloride, calcium sulphate, calcium oxide etc. are placed. These desiccants absorb the moisture and maintain an atmosphere of low humidity inside the desiccator.
